Fifty UC Berkeley graduates and current, retired, or deceased faculty members have been Nobel Prize winners; a total of 131 Nobel laureates have had some affiliation with the campus. E.O. Lawrence, the first Cal faculty member to receive the Nobel Prize (1939), accepted the award in Wheeler Hall as travel to Europe was not possible due to World War II. Berkeley professor Jennifer Doudna, a 2020 Nobel Prize winner, received the award on her patio due to the coronavirus pandemic.
